Julian May

Julian began his optical career in 1984 as a trainee Dispensing Optician. He went back to City University in London to study Optometry in 1989, achieving a First Class Honours Degree in 1992 & passed his professional qualifying examinations the following year.

He has a Professional Certificate in Glaucoma (Cardiff University) and special interests in Contact lenses, Low Vision and has a Level 3 Diploma in Diabetic Retinopathy Screening. Julian has also recently completed the postgraduate certificate in therapeutic prescribing for optometrists.

Jane has worked closely with Julian since 1996. Amongst other things, Jane is responsible for selecting all of our spectacle frames and sunglasses – not an easy task as we have over 1000 samples on display!

Mark qualified as an Optometrist in 2007 at Cardiff University. 

He has particular special interests in dry eye and myopia control contact lenses for children.

Alix started with us in October 2022 and took over the role of Managing Dispensing Optician in July 2023.

Alix has about a decade of optical experience, graduating from Anglia Ruskin university in 2021 with a distinction in Ophthalmic Dispensing. As well as running the day to day activities of the practice, she also happily deals with any complex dispensing issues that may arise and has a special interest in Low Vision and paediatric dispensing.

Anna is our contact lens optician and has extensive knowledge of the vast range of contact lenses available today. Anna now runs our dry eye clinic alongside the contact lens clinic, offering personalised dry eye treatments for her patients. She specialises in Myopia control contact lenses for children, utilising specialised equipment to monitor the progression.

Alex started with us in February 2017. He embarked on the 3-year Dispensing Opticians course in September 2022.

He loves all of our technology, especially the optometric diagnostic equipment. Alex is amazing in the lab and there aren’t many repairs he won’t have a go at!

Deb began working in optics in 2000 and qualified as a Dispensing Optician in September 2008. During that time Deb has worked for both independent and high street multiple optician practices. She joined Julian May Opticians in November 2010.

Deb takes a special interest in Low Vision and is constantly on the lookout for new and innovative ways of helping our patients that have less than perfect sight even with the best spectacles or contact lenses.

Mary started with us in October 2016 and ever since she started, Mary has always been enormously enthusiastic about all things eye related, proven herself to be quick to learn, keen to help and she always has a smile on her face.

Evie joined us in January 2022 and is flourishing in her role. She loves helping people to choose their frames, working in the lab glazing spectacles and assisting the clinics with the diagnostic equipment.

Lindsay is our Clinical Assistant to the Optometrists performing Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) scans, Visual Field tests and Macular pigment screening. Lindsay will look after you whilst you are under the care of the Optometrists.

Ryan started with us in 2023 and particularly enjoys using the diagnostic equipment such as our OCT and visual fields machine. Ryan always has a smile on his face and will happily help you choose your new frames.
